1 license may be sufficient for your entire organization

A.I.M. requires a License per hosting SQL Server® Instance, the basic license includes 1 database for the very small business.

There are also licences for 2, 5, 10, 25 and up to 2500 or more databases (Enterprise license).

The more databases included in the license, the lower the price per database. The Enterprise license is of course the most expensive, but gives you the lowest price per database from 2500 databases and up.

A calculation example

Maintaining indexes without tooling requires the following steps:

• Identify indexes to create or delete: Execute scripts to locate the indexes that need to be created or deleted.
• Review and determine index actions: Assess the identified indexes and decide which ones to create or delete based on their relevance and performance impact.
• Schedule index creation tasks: save the scripts and schedule their execution during off-peak hours to minimize system interference, at least for index creation tasks.
• Verify the results: After the scripts have run, verify that the intended indexes have been created or deleted successfully.
• Maintain a detailed log: Document the steps taken, the decisions made, and the results of index maintenance activities in a comprehensive log.

Index maintenance can be a time-consuming task, requiring manual intervention to ensure that indexes are optimized and up-to-date. If done weekly, which is necessary considering the dynamic nature of data, we think this can take about 15 minutes per week per database.

Outsourcing this task for a single database to an external consultant at a rate of €80,- per hour would cost over €1,000,- per year, a significantly higher cost compared to the basic A.I.M. license.

Please note: A single A.I.M. installation can technically manage an unlimited number of databases, so in theory, you only need one license. However, if your IT infrastructure is segmented into multiple subnets or VLANs (e.g., for security purposes), such that the A.I.M. SQL Server cannot directly communicate with SQL Servers in other segments, you will need a separate licensed installation for each segment where you want to utilize A.I.M.
